Choosing a Perth Primary School as a UK Family

Moving to another country is a huge adjustment, but if you're relocating with children, one of the biggest questions quickly becomes:

"How does school actually work in Australia?"

I remember asking myself exactly the same thing.

Coming from the UK, I assumed it would be fairly similar.

It isn't.

Not drastically different — but different enough that it can feel confusing when you're already juggling visas, rentals and settling into a new country.

The good news?

Once you understand how the system works, it becomes much less overwhelming.

Start with where you plan to live

One of the biggest differences is that many public schools have catchment areas.

In simple terms, the school your child is eligible to attend often depends on where you live.

That's why I always encourage families not to choose a school first.

Choose the right suburb first.

Your suburb choice can shape your schooling options, your commute and your family's lifestyle.

Public or private?

Like the UK, Australia has both public and private schools.

Public schools are generally excellent and many families relocating to Perth choose them.

Private schools offer another option, often with different facilities, values or religious affiliations.

Neither is automatically "better".

It really depends on your child, your budget and what you're looking for.

Visit schools if you can

Websites are helpful.

Google reviews are helpful.

But nothing replaces walking through the school gates.

Notice:

• The atmosphere.
• How staff interact with children.
• The playgrounds.
• The classrooms.
• How welcomed you feel.

Sometimes you'll know within minutes whether a school feels right.

Don't panic if your child is nervous

Moving schools is a huge life event.

Making new friends.

New teachers.

Different accents.

Different routines.

It's completely normal for children — and parents — to feel emotional.

The encouraging thing is that children are often far more resilient than we give them credit for.

With support, they usually adapt quicker than we expect.

Every family's priorities are different

Some families prioritise:

• Outdoor space.
• Sporting opportunities.
• Arts and music.
• Before and after school care.
• Proximity to home.

There isn't a perfect school.

There is simply the school that's the best fit for your family.

Don't compare your journey

One family may have everything organised months before arriving.

Another may still be choosing schools after they've landed.

Neither is wrong.

Every relocation journey looks different.

Final thoughts

If I could go back and reassure myself before we moved, I'd simply say:

"You don't need every answer before you arrive."

You'll learn.

You'll ask questions.

You'll meet other parents.

And before long, you'll find your place in the community.
