Alkimos vs Yanchep: Which One Suits Your Family?

One of the questions I'm asked most often is:

"Should we choose Alkimos or Yanchep?"

The honest answer?

There isn't a right one.

I've spent a lot of time driving around both suburbs, visiting homes, exploring the beaches and getting to know the local communities.

They're neighbours, but they each have their own personality.

Alkimos

If someone asked me to describe Alkimos in one sentence, I'd probably say:

"Established enough to feel convenient, but still relaxed enough to enjoy the coastal lifestyle."

Alkimos has grown quickly over the past few years.

You'll find:

• Beautiful beaches
• Schools
• Cafés
• Shopping options
• Family parks
• Good road connections

For many families relocating from overseas, it feels like a comfortable balance between convenience and lifestyle.

Yanchep

Yanchep feels different.

There's a little more breathing space.

A little more nature.

A little more of that "weekend every day" feeling.

It's home to the beautiful national park, stunning beaches and a growing town centre.

Many locals describe it as having a more relaxed coastal-town atmosphere, although amenities continue to expand.

Commuting

If you're working in Perth, commuting is an important consideration.

The northern rail extension has made travelling from both suburbs much easier than it used to be, opening up more options for commuters.

Think carefully about:

• Your workplace
• Your partner's workplace
• School runs
• FIFO travel
• Family support

A beautiful suburb can quickly lose its appeal if you're spending hours every week in the car.

Which is better for families?

Honestly?

Both.

Both offer:

• Beaches
• Parks
• Community feel
• Growing infrastructure
• Family-friendly neighbourhoods

The difference is more about lifestyle than quality.

My advice

Don't choose from Google Maps.

Come and visit.

• Walk the beaches.
• Drive the streets.
• Visit the local shopping centres.
• Have a coffee.
• See how each place makes you feel.

Sometimes that's worth more than reading a hundred online reviews.

Looking back...

If you'd asked me before we moved to Australia whether we'd end up living where we do now, I honestly wouldn't have known.

Sometimes the suburb you fall in love with isn't the one you originally planned.

Stay open-minded.

Perth has so many fantastic communities, and often the right one finds you.
